Overlocking: a stitched yarn border
Carpet overlocking creates a visible stitched edge. It can finish suitable offcuts as mats and runners, with the proposed yarn finish assessed against the carpet and the job.
Binding: a material border
Carpet binding covers the cut edge with a strip of material. Consider it when that border appearance suits the piece, and ask which finish options are available for the carpet.
What matters more than the name of the finish?
- The carpet construction, thickness and backing condition.
- The finished size and any corners, curves or cut-outs.
- The look you want and available edging options.
- Where the piece will be used, including moisture, floor surface and door clearance.
Neither method repairs damaged backing, makes indoor carpet waterproof or provides non-slip backing. Avoid choosing on a blanket claim that one method is always stronger.
What should I do after a new carpet installation?
Keep suitable remnants, measure the spaces where you want mats, and send photos before cutting. See our offcuts-to-mats and runners guide for the details to include.
